Leon Thomas

Ahead of their debut season in the second tier of Welsh football, Trethomas Bluebirds have announced the signing of former Risca United star man Leon Thomas.

The 22-year-old winger has played all of his football up until now for the Cuckoos, but is set to join Mark Dunford’s Bluebirds after receiving interest from several clubs.

He’ll be Trethomas’ second signing this summer, after former Goytre AFC goalkeeper, Cameron Clarke, joined last month.

Speaking to Caerphilly Observer after the move, Thomas said: “It was the perfect move for me at this point in my career.

“I’ve been at Risca forever and it just felt like the right time to try a new challenge. I already know a few of the players and the pitch of course, so it’s ideal.”

Thomas has already had a taste of Cymru South football, having played a season there for Risca back in the 2021/22 season.

“I was a lot younger then and feel I’m a far more complete player now. I’m ready for the step up.”

Asked about his place in a competitive squad, Thomas said: “Obviously they’re losing Levi Rees so I’m hopeful I can slot into that position; but I know I have to work hard every week.

“I did have some interest elsewhere, but after the first training session I knew the set-up was for me. Everything was done to a high standard and I can’t wait to get started.”

Manager Mark Dunford also gave a few words about his latest signing: “I am extremely pleased to reach and agreement with Leon.

“He is a player who I have admired for a few seasons now and my assistant Dai (Matthew Jones) always spoke highly of him from when he coached him as a youth player.

“Whenever we played Risca we knew what he was capable of and always had a specific plan to attempt to nullify him. Personally I’m looking forward to working closely with Leon and I believe he will flourish within our set-up.”
