Caerphilly County’s pool team have reached the quarter finals of the Welsh County Cup after beating an experienced Swansea side 18-14.

Although Caerphilly came into the game as the division one favourites, Swansea were a team “not short of talent” according to captain Lee Loftus, despite being in division eight.

With the recent passing of player and friend Andrew Gomer, the Caerphilly side turned-up in their tribute shirts ready for a tough match in Trecenydd Snooker Club.

The match was first to 18, with Caerphilly taking an early 4-3 lead after the first set, hoping to make it to finals day on December 7 in Abercrave.

In a close match throughout, Caerphilly managed to pull away in the fourth session to only need two of the final seven frames in the last session.

The pairing of Richie Oliver and Chris Harvey eventually got Caerphilly over the line to win by four frames and secure their spot in the next round.

With Andrew Gomer’s flag behind them, the room “went wild” according to Loftus, with the Swansea players gracious in defeat.

After the match, Loftus said: “It was a game that had everything. Well done to Stephen Evans, Richie Oliver, Andy West, Chris Hogarth, Matthew Davies, Chris Harvey, and Shaun Moore.

“This one is for you Andrew Gomer.”
