Trethomas Bluebirds were just one of several sides to secure points late in the match

In another packed weekend of football across Caerphilly County Borough, there was lots of late drama as sides look to climb further up the table.

Starting at the top, Trethomas Bluebirds scored two brilliant free-kicks in stoppage time to a record a last gasp 2-1 win over rivals Newport City in the Cymru South.

The Bluebirds went behind early at the Centre for Sporting Excellence on Friday night, and waited until the 90th minute to respond with a Kallum Thomas free-kick.

With the game seemingly heading for a draw, Jack Jones had other ideas and fired his side three points clear at the top with a 98th minute free-kick into the top corner.

Trethomas Bluebirds snatch victory with two late goals against rivals Newport City

Saturday saw three borough sides in Amateur Trophy action, where Treowen Stars continued their impressive start to the season with a 5-0 win over Cardiff Corinthians.

Goals from Christopher Colvin, Aaron Thomas, Christopher Hartland, and a Christian Davies brace, meant the Stars booked their spot in the next round.

But it was not such good news for Abercarn United, who exited the cup following a narrow 2-1 defeat to Penydarren.

Risca United also bow out of the cup following a 3-3 thriller against league rivals Goytre AFC.

After taking an early lead through Lloyd Oliver, the visitors hit back to take a 3-1 lead with 90 minutes played in Ystrad Mynach.

A stoppage time brace from Callum Hutton forced the tie to penalties, where the Cuckoos couldn’t capitalise and lost 5-3.

In the Gwent County Premier League, Wattsville were on the wrong end of a 10-0 thumping to Pill. That’s one they’ll quickly want to forget.

Cefn Fforest also had a Saturday which shouldn’t last long in the memory; they fell 5-2 to Lucas Cwmbran on the road.

In the Gwent County First Division, Aberbargoed Buds moved closer to the top after a thumping 7-1 win over borough rivals Rhymney.

Relegation threatened Rhymney were no match for the Buds, who dished-out goals from all over with Ross Fowler scoring two, and Dylan Jones, Lewys Golding, Elliot Williams, Shane Brewer, and Ryan Morgans getting the rest.

Pontymister also had cause for celebration after their 2-0 win over Mardy. A brace off the bench from Max Bennett puts them up into 11th.

Elsewhere in the division, Machen moved into seventh with a comfortable 5-1 victory over Graig Villa Dino.

Two goals from Daniel Lewis with help from James George, Dean Cometson, and Lewis Willetts, made it an easy day at the office.

Finally, Pentwynmawr Athletic failed to respond after going 1-0 behind to Pilcs FC. They sit in fifth after that loss.

In Gwent Division Two, Trinant suffered a 4-0 defeat away to Thornwell Red and White FC. They sit eighth in the division.

In the South Wales Alliance Premier League, Caerphilly Athletic beat Tonyrefail 5-0 to improve on their start to the season.

Goals from Sebastian James, Joey Morelli, Troy Greening-Hiscock, and a Will Toms brace means Caerphilly improve up into third.

Aber Valley were also in action, but could only manage a 1-1 draw against bottom of the table Ton Pentre. Captain Owain Davies with the goal.

In Division Two, Nelson Cavaliers managed to steal a point thanks to a 96th minute Cameron Gray equaliser. 2-2 on the day.

Down in the North Gwent Football League, there was a borough clash between Newbridge Town and Maesycwmmer, with the hosts claiming bragging rights after a 5-0 whitewash.

A hat-trick from Liam Hickman made sure of the points, while Ethan Phillips also made the scoresheet.

There was also Newport and District Football League action, where Bedwas hosted Risca Town in another derby clash.

It was the visitors who took a 2-0 lead through Kaylem Allen and Daniel Gunter, but a red card to Rhys Lewis opened the door to Bedwas who scored three through Charlie Colwill, Matthew McCole, and Dafydd Jones to snatch the points.

In the TERV Division One, Llanbradach claimed a 5-2 victory over Pontypridd. A hattrick from Max Howell and a further two from Glenn Richards and Curtis Dower made sure of the result.
