Wales’ over-60s side finished sixth in the tournament

Wales Over-60s Women’s Hockey squad placed sixth in the World Cup, but take the positives from a “fantastic tournament”.

Wales travelled to New Zealand to compete in the Masters World Cup recently, with the over-60s squad drawn in a tough group alongside rivals England and Scotland, as well as Australia.

The Welsh side beat nearest rivals England, but lost on the day to both Australia and Scotland.

Beverly Rogers, from Caerphilly, played her part in the tournament, and spoke to Caerphilly Observer about the trip: “There were some tough early games before we played Canada in a crossover match which we won and I scored in.

“We went on to lose to hosts New Zealand however, finishing sixth but feeling fantastic, especially seeing older women still involved in sport at this level.”

There was good news elsewhere though, as Beverly added that the over-65s squad managed to finish second.

Rogers added: “It still feels surreal that I played in a world cup in such a beautiful country.

“I’d like to thank our sponsors and all those who helped make the trip possible.”
