Trethomas Bluebirds were one side who benefited from braving the cold weather

There were some important results for teams at the top over the weekend, although most matches were called off due to bad weather.

Starting in the second tier of Welsh football, Trethomas Bluebirds reclaimed top spot in the Cymru South with a narrow 2-1 win over Gwent rivals Newport City.

It was a freezing cold Friday night in Newport, with the Bluebirds looking to do the double this season over a side who were promoted alongside them in 2024.

Mistakes cost the hosts dearly on the night, starting with an own goal shortly followed by a Gareth Tedstone finish to make it 2-0 at half-time.

Newport responded well in the second-half, but a Josh Graham goal wasn’t enough to restore parity. The Bluebirds move two clear of Llanelli in second after the victory.

While there were some postponements across Saturday, Treowen Stars were glad to see their game go ahead. They extended the gap at the top with a thrilling 3-2 win over Undy in the Ardal South East.

From two goals behind at half-time, captain Christian Davies pulled one back, before Aaron Thomas scored to bring it level after 87 minutes.

With the game heading for a draw, sub Christopher Hartland had other ideas when he netted the winner with the last kick of the game. The Stars are three points clear of second with a game in hand.

You have to go down to the South Wales Premier League to find the next match to go ahead; with Caerphilly Athletic in action – another side looking to gain promotion this season.

They hosted Ton Pentre, and thanks to a first-half Iwan John goal, maintain pressure on the high-flying Cardiff Airport in first.

There was some league cup action between Newbridge Town and Fleur De Lys, with the visitors claiming bragging rights on this occasion.

A back and forth contest, Newbridge struck first through Liam Hickman, before Davin Symes responded with an equaliser.

The visitors then took the lead through captain Kane Giffard, but Stephen Cook’s late goal forced penalties. Fleur De Lys came out on top from the spot though, eventually winning 4-1.

There was another derby in the Newport and District Football League between Risca Town and Bedwas, with the hosts making light work of their opposition in a 7-1 win.

Daniel Gunter and William Bishop both scored twice for the Cuckoos, with Ben Morgan, Joshua Dowdall, and Jack Tomlinson all chipping in. Ryan Jones scored the consolation for Bedwas.

Risca are two points off top spot but rivals Croesyceiliog have two games in hand.
