Caerphilly sides were busy across a packed weekend of football

As we enter the final stages of the 2024/25 season, it’s crunch time for those pushing for promotion or fighting to survive.

Starting in the second tier of Welsh football and Trethomas Bluebirds managed to claim a 2-2 draw in a tricky away match against Trefelin on Friday night.

Mark Dunford’s side opened the scoring first through a Gareth Tedstone spot kick before Swansea City legend Lee Trundle brought the tie level.

The hosts then took the lead before defender Andrew Evans scored a late header for the Bluebirds to snatch a point.

The draw temporarily saw Trethomas take top spot in the Cymru South, but Llanelli Town’s win on Saturday means they open-up a two point gap.

Moving onto Saturday and Ardal South East league leaders Treowen Stars claimed a dominant 4-0 win over fifth place Caldicot.

The Stars played their first home game since October last year, but didn’t miss a beat as striker Christopher Hartland netted a hattrick, with Corey Jenkins scoring the other.

That win puts the Stars six points clear at the top as they hope to join the Bluebirds in tier two next season.

There was an all-borough matchup elsewhere in the division as Risca United picked-up a crucial three points away to rivals Abercarn United.

The visitors took an early 2-0 lead through Finley Skiverton and Lloyd Oliver before Alex Adams answered for the hosts.

The Cuckoos held on for the win though and move into tenth. Abercarn meanwhile drop to 13th – just one point outside the relegation zone.

Cefn Fforest were the only side in action down in the Gwent Premier League, they were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Coed Eva Athletic and sit 13th of 17.

More goals in Division One as title hopefuls Aberbargoed Buds thrashed fellow borough side Pontymister 6-1 to move to within five points of first.

It was actually the visitors who opened the scoring thanks to Anthony Twyne, but the Buds soon got to work, Zak Jones and Cian Trollope both claiming a brace while Ross Fowler and Ryan Morgans chipped-in with the other goals.

Machen also had reason to celebrate after their 4-2 win over Ponthir. Daniel Lewis grabbed himself two, while Tyler Kidley and Gareth Jones both found the net. Machen move-up into seventh.

South Wales Premier League action and promotion hopefuls Caerphilly Athletic were dealt a blow after their narrow 2-1 loss to Llantwit Fadre.

Both sides were on equal points in second heading into the tie, but Iwan John’s goal wasn’t enough for the hosts, who now sit in a clear third.

Better news for Aber Valley who picked-up all three points away to Cwmaman in only their ninth match of the season. Zak Thomas and Scott Armitage with the goals in a 2-1 win.

There was an all-Caerphilly clash in Division One East as Neslon Cavaliers edged Cwrt Rawlin out in a 3-2 victory.

It was a back-and-forth contest, but goals from Corey Haines, Liam Dellanna, and Daniel Taylor were enough to overcome the two from Harry Short and James Harvey for the hosts.

A cracker of a match played-out in the North Gwent Premier Division as Newbridge Town held league leaders Fleur De Lys to a thrilling 3-3 draw.

The hosts looked to have won the match thanks to goals from Adam Pontin and a Jayce Hadigate double, but one from captain Kane Giffard and a very late brace from substitute Brooklyn Peckham-Stark forced a draw.

Elsewhere in the division and an afternoon to forget for Maesycwmmer who were beaten 5-1 at home to Garnlydan.

Good news down in the Newport and District Premier for Risca Town who celebrated a 5-2 win over The Eagles. Kaylen Allen with a hat-trick and Daniel Gunter with two. The Cuckoos sit third just five points off top.

TERV Premier action as Gilfach were involved in a crazy 3-3 draw away to Church Village. Two from Jamie Jones and another from Kieran Keane not enough for all three points on the day.

Bargoed picked-up an impressive point in a 1-1 draw away to league leaders Rhydyfelin. Gregory Frankenburg with the only Bargoed goal.

Meanwhile Cascade suffered another defeat, this time a 6-0 thrashing at home to Clifynydd.

A Division One derby as Masons Arms came out on the wrong side of a 3-2 result at home to Llanbradach.

Despite going down to ten and missing a penalty, a hat-trick from Joshua Gale was enough for the visitors.

Gelligaer were the other borough side in action – they lost 4-1 to Aber Valley Reserves.
