It was generally a good weekend for Caerphilly-based sides

Five games into the new season and standings across the South East Wales Cricket League are beginning to take shape, with seven borough sides in action over the weekend.

Starting in Division Two and Newbridge had a catchable target of 162 set by visitors Rogerstone Welfare on Saturday afternoon.

The hosts got to within touching distance, but came up just short, losing by 20 runs. Newbridge sit seventh with two wins this season.

There was an all-borough clash in Division Three, which saw Machen make the short trip to face Blackwood Town.

It turned out to be a very close match, as Machen opened the batting and set a very high total of 260 for Blackwood to have a go at.

The hosts managed to get to within one run, but Machen held on to claim their second win of the season. Blackwood also have two wins.

Cricket catch-up: Wins for Crumlin and Machen early in the season

Crumlin’s winless start to the season continued after a disappointing loss to Llandaff.

Setting a lowly total of 109, Llandaff made a bit of a meal of the chase, but eventually won by three wickets.

In Division Four and Pontymister and Crosskeys moved-up into second in the standings after a narrow seven-run victory over Pentyrch.

Having opened the batting and setting a total of 253 runs and losing just five wickets, Pentyrch made a good go of it, but Pontymister managed to bowl them out short of the run total.

Down to Division Seven and Abercarn recorded their second win of the season with a low-scoring victory over Mountain Ash.

Having batted first, visitors Abercarn set a very manageable total of 124 for the hosts to catch, but they fell 16 runs short, all out for just 108.

Finally in Division Ten, Cefn Fforest and Maesycwmmer were given a gift of a win at home to Creigiau, who batted first and set a total of just 86 runs

The borough side made lightwork of the chase, winning with eight wickets to spare. That’s Cefn Fforest’s first win of the season.

End of season silverware for Caerphilly, Deri, Senghenydd Sirens, and Bargoed Warriors
