As Caerphilly County Borough basked in a heatwave on the weekend, its cricket sides were feeling the heat in the South East Wales Cricket League.
Starting in Division Two and Newbridge were in action at home to Penarth seconds. The visitors batted first and scored 214 runs, for the loss of five wickets, in their allotted overs. Newbridge successfully chased down that total with two wickets to spare.
The win sees Newbridge climb to sixth in the table.
Down in Division Three, Blackwood Town earned a win at home to Miskin Manor seconds.
The visitors batted first and scored 215 runs, which Blackwood beat with five wickets to spare.
Blackwood are currently third in the table, with six wins from 11 games.
However, Machen were beaten away to Chepstow seconds. The hosts won the toss and elected to bat first, setting up 192 for Machen to chase. However, they were unable to do so – scoring 180 all out.
The results leaves Machen in sixth place in the table.
Elsewhere in the division, Crumlin remain bottom of the standings after losing at home to Usk.
Crumlin were bowled out for 140 after winning the toss and electing to bat. Usk reached their target of 141 within 34 overs, for the loss of six wickets.
Over in Division Four, Pontymister and Crosskeys fell agonisingly short in their home match against Cardiff’s thirds.
Sent in to bat first, the visitors scored 212 for the loss of eight wickets, but the home side could only manage 211, for nine wickets, in their allotted overs.
Pontymister are currently fourth in the table, with five wins from 11 games.
Down in Division Seven, Abercarn lost away to St Fagans thirds, and sit seventh in the table.
Over in Division Ten, Cefn Fforest and Maesycwmmer fell to a home defeat to Abergavenny thirds.
The hosts elected to bat, and scored 166 with the loss of eight wickets. Abergavenny scored 169, winning the match by four wickets.
Cefn Fforest and Maesycwmmer remain second from bottom in the table following that loss.
