As we inch ever closer to the end of the season, cricket sides from across the borough were back in action on the weekend, with everything still to play for in the South East Wales Cricket League.
Starting in Division Two, Newbridge drew away to Rogerstone Welfare firsts following a nail-biting finish.
Sent in to bat, the hosts made 212-7, and Newbridge’s reply got off to a shaky start, losing both openers with 14 runs on the board.
The visitors recovered and looked on course to reach their target, but fell from 171-5 to 212 all out to record a dramatic tie.
Newbridge stay in eighth in the table following that result.
Elsewhere, Machen edged an all-borough affair in Division Three with a four-wicket win at home to Blackwood Town.
The visitors elected to bat first and posted 190-5, but Machen recovered from 97-6 to chase down their target inside 41 overs with no further wickets lost.
Despite the win, Machen slip to eighth in the standings while Blackwood remain in third.
Crumlin sit at the bottom of the table following their loss away to Llandaff seconds.
The borough side bowled out the hosts for 237, but made a shaky start to their run chase and found themselves four down with ten runs on the board.
The middle order steadied the ship but Crumlin were bowled out for 135, meaning their search for a second league win of the season goes on.
Division Four side Pontymister and Crosskeys recorded a narrow loss away to Pentyrch seconds, who chose to bat first and made 249-9.
The visitors were 154-3 a little over halfway through their overs but wickets fell steadily and they were bowled out for 239, leaving them just short of their target.
The result sees Pontymister and Crosskeys drop to third in the table.
There was a similarly narrow defeat in Division Seven for Abercarn, who lost by just seven runs at home to Mountain Ash firsts.
After bowling out the visitors for 191, Abercarn were themselves all out for 184, leaving them in seventh place in the table, level on points with that day’s opponents but with a better head-to-head record.
Finally, in Division Ten, Cefn Fforest and Maesycwmmer recorded a thumping nine-wicket victory away to bottom-of-the-table Creigiau seconds.
The hosts chose to bat first, scoring 186-9, and the borough side chased down their target for the loss of just one wicket and with more than seven overs to spare.
Cefn Fforest and Maesycwmmer remain ninth in the table.
