Gerwyn Price was denied a second Players Championship darts title in the space of 24 hours after losing to Joe Cullen in the final on Wednesday night.

Price, from Markham, won the Players Championship on Tuesday night – staging a string of impressive comebacks along the way.

The 40-year-old came agonisingly close to repeating that achievement in Germany on September 10 – but missed out in the deciding leg.

Price began the night with a 6-1 win over Tavis Dudeney, before beating Stephen Burton by the same margin in the following round.

They were followed by 6-2 wins over Jeffrey De Graaf and Sebastian Bialecki respectively, before Price earned a 6-4 quarter-final victory over Michael Unterbuchner.

Danny Noppert was next in line for Price, who beat the Dutchman 7-3 to reach his second consecutive Players Championship final.

There, Cullen took an early two-leg lead before Price hit back with legs of 12 and 11 darts to draw level at 2-2.

Cullen later regained his two-leg buffer but Price pegged him back to 6-6.

The pair exchanged a leg each to keep the tie level at 7-7, setting up a deciding leg – which Cullen seized by pinning double four to take the title.
