Wales women’s squad for the upcoming tournament
Wales women’s squad for the upcoming tournament

A host of Caerphilly-based players will be representing Wales at the World Cup equivalent for walking football later this month.

Competing under the banner of Cymru Amdani Hi, nine players from Caerphilly County Borough will be part of squads for the over 40s, over 50s, and over 60s women’s teams.

Wales is also sending a men’s over 40s team to play in the Federation of International Walking Football Associations World Nations Cup in Spain.

The tournament brings together teams from around the world for a week of international fixtures and community events. Wales’ women’s and men’s side will face opponents from around the world between October 21 and October 31, in Torrevieja.

The squads are self-funded, with players covering their own travel and accommodation costs, supported by small business sponsorships and fundraising within their clubs.

Among the Welsh players are eight from Caerphilly Castle Ladies, including Amy Ryan, Kay Pritchard, and Clair Petherham in the over-40s; Rachel Roberts in the over-50s; and Colleen O’Connor, Mandy Beach, Sandra Brown and Bev Rogers in the over-60s. Sara Morgan, in the over 50s squad, plays for Fleur de Lys.

Women’s walking football side wins title as only Welsh side

Vice-captain Amy Ryan, who plays in goal for Caerphilly Castle, said walking football has given her a new sporting outlet.

“I played rugby for years and years — I got a bit broken and a bit older,” she said.

“My partner Kay [Pritchard] introduced me to walking football and I’ve been playing now for around three years.

“It’s perfect for anyone who loves sport but who may feel they don’t want to be running around on a pitch against 16- and 17-year-olds. It’s slower and lower contact.”

Amy said her rugby background helps her confidence in goal.

“I’m a goalkeeper and absolutely love it. I don’t have the fear factor — I’m not scared about putting myself on the floor,” she added.

Caerphilly Castle Ladies only launched their walking football section in 2023, but have quickly become one of Wales’ strongest clubs, with multiple international call-ups.

“We are so lucky here to have a club like Caerphilly Castle Ladies,” Amy said.

“We’ve been able to get a sponsor for our away shirts with Valley Plants, and the Green Lady pub has supported us in the past, but apart from that we are completely self-sufficient.

“We’re always looking for sponsors to help us out — especially for this tournament.”
