Markham’s Gerwyn Price fell at the final hurdle at the World Series of Darts Finals in Amsterdam – losing 11-5 to Ross Smith in the showpiece on Sunday.

Price entered the competition in the first round, beating Australia’s Brody Klinge 6-4, before dismissing Canada’s Jim Long 10-5 in the second round.

It set up a quarter-final encounter with James Wade – with Price coming away with a 10-7 victory.

He then saw off Welsh number one Jonny Clayton in the semi-finals, winning 11-7.

But it was not to be in the final for Price, who could not stop an imperious Smith.

The Englishman started off strongly, but Price battled back to level the scores at 5-5 after striking an 11-darter.

However, Smith produced back-to-back checkouts of 123 and 127 to kick-off a six-leg rampage, sealing victory with a 14-dart break of throw in the Dutch capital.

“I’m absolutely made up with the win, I’m just so happy,” said Smith. “You’re playing Gerwyn Price, he’s one of the best players in the world. You’ve got to up your game, so to beat this man, wow.”

Following the defeat, former world champion Price said: “I was absolutely rubbish in that final, but don’t take anything away from Ross, he was brilliant.

“He took his opportunities and some big checkouts at the right time. But I’m very disappointed.

“I’m playing some good darts and earning some good money. I’m absolutely gutted today, but I’m doing well – I think I’ll be fine.”
