Nelson Phoenix Cricket Club has played its first match in a new colour kit, beating Caerphilly and Bedwas in the first division of the Caerphilly and District Midweek League.

After a run of wins in subsequent games this season, the team is currently placed third in the league, behind more established sides Blackwood and Tredegar.

Team Captain Gareth Morgan said: “After finishing last but one in the league last year and struggling to find a full team of players, the new kit has given us a real shot in the arm and seen us with reserve players and riding high in the league.

“Bowler Lee Davies has taken 12 wickets so far this season, which was enough to win the individual bowling award for the division last year.

“Batsman Dai Fowler has also scored over 380 runs in six innings, including an innings of 103 not out.

“It’s also great to see young talent coming through, with Tom Jenkins and Lewis Phillips regularly taking wickets and making catches in the field.”

Kit sponsor Alun Price, managing director of Bryn Compost, said: “It’s a pleasure to sponsor a local cricket side and see them do so well with a majority of players selected from the village. We wish them all the best for the rest of the season.”
