Coleg Gwent rugby team tackle Welsh Colleges League

Sport | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:28, Wednesday February 16th, 2011.

With the rugby season well underway, students at Coleg Gwent’s Crosskeys Campus have hit their stride, decimating the opposition in a run of impressive wins in the Welsh Rugby Union Colleges League.

Their most recent win against Neath Port Talbot College last week finished 28-10 and featured a strong performance from Coleg Gwent A-level student Elliot Wheaton, 17, from Langstone, who scored three tries after coming back to the team from a year of injuries. The talented player has seen a great return to form, scoring in each of his games since his return to the team.

The win follows a 59-6 victory over Coleg Sir Gar, 64-0 played away against Pembrokeshire College and a 41-12 win away against Gower College Swansea in the British Colleges Elite Cup.

Currently third in the WRU Colleges League table, the team are hoping to build on their success when they play their next match against Coleg Morgannwg this week.

Sports Lecturer Steven Llewellyn said: “We have made excellent progress this term. The team have done exceptionally well so far, securing bonus point victories and putting themselves in a good position in the British College League. We hope to build on this success in future fixtures.”

It’s a big year for rugby at the campus, as students look forward to playing against schools in a rugby tour to New Zealand and Hong Kong during the summer.
