Five talented sports students from Coleg Gwent’s Crosskeys campus represented Wales recently when they were selected to play in the British Colleges Cup rugby tournament.

First year National Diploma Sport and NVQ level 3 Achieving Excellence in Sport students Gareth Kemp, Jamie Sollis, Cameron Regan, Rhys Francis and Sam Bevan were selected for the Welsh team at British Colleges Sport rugby trails earlier this year.

Though the Welsh team lost the first leg of the British Colleges Cup they performed well in the return fixture against England on Friday May 14beating the team 22-13.

Second row Cameron Regan said: “I was absolutely honoured to be chosen. Out of all of the people at the trials, to be one of those selected is great – it’s a privilege to play for my country.”

The students are all members of Newport Gwent Dragon’s Junior Academy, which is based at Crosskeys Campus.

Coleg Gwent sports lecturer and British Colleges Sport Welsh team coach Steve Llewellyn said: “We are very proud that five of our students were selected to represent Wales in the British Colleges Cup.

“It’s great experience for them to play competitive games, and they are proud to be representing Wales.”
