The World Indoor Bowls Council Championship begins in Pontllanfraith on Tuesday.

The four-day tournament, being held at Islywn Indoor Bowls Club has attracted players from countries across the globe including Australia, Canada and the Netherlands.

Michael Conlon, chairman of the Islwyn Indoor Bowls and Social Club, said: “It is our privilege to be hosting such a prestigious tournament at our club, and I greatly look forward to welcoming players, supporters and officials to the club for the competition.

“Congratulations must of course go to the players selected to play for their countries, and I am confident that, following the tournament, they will leave with happy memories of Caerphilly County Borough and the Islwyn Indoor Bowls Club.”

The tournament will begin on Tuesday at 9.30am with an opening ceremony. County Borough Mayor Cllr James Fussell will deliver the first roll to declare the tournament officially open.

He said: “We are delighted to be working with the World Indoor Bowls Council and the Islwyn Bowls and Social Club in bringing this wonderful tournament to Wales and to the county borough of Caerphilly.

“I am sure that our guests will have an enjoyable time throughout their stay, and would encourage as many people as possible to come along and show their support.”

Tony Horobin, World Indoor Bowls Council President said: “During the course of the four days of competition, the players will be competing for the titles of WIBC Men’s Singles Champion, WIBC Ladies’ Singles Champion and WIBC Mixed Pairs Champions.

“The competition, I am sure, will be fierce but I am equally sure that games will be played in the right spirit of sportsmanship and spectators will admire the skills demonstrated by the players.”
