A Coleg Gwent student is celebrating an impressive performance at the Karate and Taekwondo World Championships in Italy last month, winning a host of gold and silver medals.

Competing with her local club Storm Kickboxing Academy, National Diploma in Sport student Jay Sheppard smashed her way to victory winning three gold medals in Taekwondo Grades White to Yellow Belts 60kg category, Taekwondo Grades Green to Blue Belts 60kg category and in the Team (ages 16-18) category.

The talented teenager also scooped three silver medals for Semi Contact +60kg, Karate +60kg, and Team (ages 19-35), as well as picking up bronze for light contact +60kg.

Jay faced some of the sport’s toughest opponents as thousands of Taekwondo and Karate hopefuls from around the world battled it out at the competition to be crowned champions.

Jay, 17, from Ebbw Vale said: “I was really pleased with my performance and what I achieved. I’ve been training hard, so it was great to get such fantastic results.”

It’s been another successful year for the Crosskeys campus sports student, who last year came away from the World Karate and Kickboxing Association Championships in Punta Umbra, Spain, with a multitude of bronze and silver medals to her name.

Crosskeys Campus sports tutor Matt Stork said: “Congratulations to Jay for her terrific performance, it was thoroughly deserved.”
