Rugby League: Scorpions scholarship sides gain first wins of the season at Bedwas

Sport | Richard Gurner | Published: 17:00, Tuesday June 5th, 2012.

Both of South Wales Scorpions’ scholarship teams tasted victory in their first home games of the season on Saturday afternoon against London Broncos.

The under 15s beat the Super League side 30-14 before the under 16s won 26-16.

The younger age group match saw Kam Pearce-Paul try opened the scoring London with a try in the corner.

But two quick tries gave the advantage to the Scorpions, some good skill being shown as both Lewis Alexander and Luc Williams broke through from close range in consecutive sets. Josh Rogers converted the second to make the score 10-4.

Spencer Ward Henry scored Scorpions’ third with Rogers converting before London hit back when Matt Owen slid home in the corner.

Scorpions scored two more before half-time to make the score 24-8. Alexander went in for his second after before Rogers scored in the corner.

The sides shared a try apiece in the second half. Regan Grace half-way through the first half for the Scorpions with Rogers converting before London’s Tom Josling completed proceedings with Tomos Scarsbrook converting.

The under 16s game followed a similar format with most of the tries being scored before the interval.

However on the occasion, the Scorpions built up a commanding and fast 22-0 lead with Joe Gage, Josh Williams, Calvin Wellington and Ed Howley all scoring tries with Lewis Kirk converting three of them.

It was then the Broncos’ turn to get on the board. Two tries from Harry Gregory and one each from Kain Monks and Harry Lightfoot-Brown, with no conversions going over, pulled the score back to 22-16 at the break.

There was just one score in the second half, Williams going over in the corner for his second try, to complete the Welsh win.

The Scorpions under 18 Academy side failed to build on their victory against Featherstone Rovers and weren’t able to do a treble over the Londoners, losing 22-58.

All three games were played at Bedwas RFC in the Caerphilly club’s first ever hosting of Rugby League.
