South Wales Scorpions to help set up new women’s rugby league side

Sport | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:09, Tuesday July 3rd, 2012.

South Wales Scorpions are giving their full support to helping to set up a new women’s Rugby League side who are holding their first ever taster session next Monday for budding players.

The new addition to the Scorpions fold will be the first ever women’s side in Wales and has been created by referee Rebecca Whiteley, an already established Rugby League player from the north of England who is living in Cardiff, and Louise Tyson, who has played rugby union in the past and is now living in Treforest.

Both are big fans of the game of Rugby League and already have an active involvement. Rebecca is a qualified Rugby League referee and officiates in matches in South Wales on a weekly basis while Louise is currently a first aider and massager for both the University of Glamorgan and Treharris Phoenix Rugby League sides.

They will be holding an open taster session for any potential players at the University of Glamorgan Sports Park on Monday July 9 from 7pm to 8pm in the hope that they can play at least one friendly in late August of this year and kick off in the RFL leagues in 2013.

Early feelers have already been put out and they say that while the initial response has been excellent, they want to attract as many potential players as possible next Monday.

“We contact Mark Jones at Wales Rugby League and Ian Golden at South Wales Scorpions initially and we had a meeting last Thursday,” Louise said. “Everyone has been very helpful to us. Mark Jones gave us lots of advice while Phil Davies and Dave Clark at everyone at the Scorpions have given us their full backing to help us with administrative support and coaching.

“There is a lot that we need to do before next year. We will be looking for funding and sponsorship plus of course players, so if there are any ladies out there who want to give Rugby League a go, and it doesn’t matter whether you’ve played in the past or not, then please turn up in Treforest next Monday.

“We will be looking to enter a side into a national women’s league next year but we know that there’s a lot of work to be done first.”

The taster session for Wales’ first ever women’s side take place on Monday July 9, 2012, at the University of Glamorgan Sports Park in Treforest, South Wales.
