Boxing champ from Lewis School Pengam punches for the top

Kyran Jones has been named British Champion at the recent British School Boy Boxing Championships

A Caerphilly County Borough school boy has been named British Champion at the recent British School Boy Boxing Championships, after an impressive 14-4 victory over the undefeated, two times English Champion.

Lewis School Pengam pupil, Kyran Jones, aged 14, ruled the ring in the 60kg category, winning the British Title against Tommy Ball from London, who was previously undefeated in 14 fights.

Kyran said: “I’m extremely proud of what I achieved on the night as I was the only Welsh fighter who won a title. In the future I would love to represent Wales in the Commonwealth Games and, ultimately, become a full time member of the British Amateur Team and compete in the Olympic Games.”

Already Welsh Champion, Kyran trains in Gelligaer and fights with an orthodox style, similar to that of the current WBO Light Heavyweight World Champion, Nathan Cleverly, who was born in Phillipstown.

Cllr Rhianon Passmore, cabinet member for education, congratulated Kyran on his win and said: “This is such a wonderful achievement. I hope Kyran realises his future ambitions, and that we have another boxer from the county borough who reaches world success.”
