Rugby League U18: South Wales Scorpions 34 Castleford Tigers 24

Sport | Richard Gurner | Published: 09:22, Monday September 3rd, 2012.

South Wales Scorpions’ under 18s secured their first win against a Super League Academy side this season when they beat Castleford Tigers 34-24 in Caerphilly on Saturday.

It was the penultimate match in a competitive season for the Scorpions’ Academy. A number of them will hope to graduate to the first team next year, and after this performance, club head coach Dave Clark will have plenty of bodies to choose from.

Castleford were 12-10 up at half-time but four tries in the second half secured matters.

Jack Condy, on his Scorpions debut after playing for Crusaders under 16s last year and Penallta Storm under 17s this year, led the way with two tries. Chris Leyshon, Lewis Barnett, Connor Farrer and Charlie Rogers also crossed. Courtney Davies converted five of the six.

Castleford replied with two tries in each half – Tommy Newbould and Nathan Hammond in the first, then Luke Day and Jordan Gill in the second – with Connor Land converting all four.

The Scorpions under 18s conclude the club’s season for 2013 with another home match next Saturday when they entertain Salford City Reds at Caerphilly RFC (kick-off 2.30pm).
