The Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council recently presented three young, local gymnasts with the awards they won while representing Wales last year.

The aspiring gymnasts from Cwmcarn Gymnastics Club were selected to represent Wales in an International Gymnastics Competition in Switzerland last year and were awarded fifth place out of 15 competitors.

Allana Sparkes, 11, Kira Sparkes, 15, and Olivia Hillman, 11, competed against teams from USA, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and England. They attended a meeting of full council last week to show their awards to councillors.

Mary Penny, the girls coach, said: “For us to go out and finish ahead of world class countries is a superb result. We would like to thank the council for their support of the club. We are now continuing with training, working hard towards our next competition in Deeside North Wales – the Welsh Sports Acrobatic and Tumbling Championships in March.”

The gymnasts will now represent Wales at the Celtic Cup in Cardiff on April 6 and 7.
