Caerphilly physiotherapist to travel to World University Games

Sport | Richard Gurner | Published: 15:03, Friday March 29th, 2013.

A physiotherapist from Caerphilly has been chosen to help the Great Britain squad at the upcoming World University Games.

Nikki McLaughlin, who runs Baseline Physiotherapy on Caerphilly Business Park, specialises in musculoskeletal sports injuries and will travel to Russia this summer.

The 32-year-old father-of-two has been given the prestigious job to aid the aches, pains and injuries of the athletes representing Team GB Students less than 12 months after being selected as a games maker for the Olympics and Paralympics. He also travelled to Dehli for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

He said: “Working with the athletes in the Commonwealth, Paralympic, and now the BUCS, games are the stand out high-points of my career to date. I’m hoping to add to that list with the Commonwealth games next year.”

The proud dad, who studied for his chosen profession at the Cardiff University, has also worked with top rugby clubs such as the Newport Gwent Dragons and Exeter Chiefs.

The World University Games, governed by British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS), takes place every two years, and this year’s games are being held in Kazan, Russia.

Competitors are eligible if they are born in the UK and are a student between the ages of 18 and 28.
