Since taking top places at the South East Wales Junior Development meet in Newport, members of Caerphilly County Swimming Squad have been called up for Gemau Cymru, an event for young athletes in Wales.

This year Caerphilly County Swim Squad has a team of 24 swimmers selected to take part. They will get the opportunity to compete against the best young swimmers in Wales at the event between of July 5 and 7. The athletes will compete in the multi-sport event that takes place in several different areas around Cardiff.

Head Coach Peter Key said: “This is a fantastic selection for Caerphilly County Swim Squad. When Gemau Cymru started two years ago, our selected squad was made up of five swimmers.

“The selection this year of 24 of our swimmers from across all squads goes to show what we are achieving and growing as a club.

“We are the only competitive swimming club in Caerphilly County. Our swimmers train hard, compete against the top clubs in Wales on a regular basis, and are starting to reap the rewards of the hard work they put in at the pool.

“It is fantastic to see so many of our swimmers being selected and gaining the recognition they deserve.”

The selection follows the success of other young Caerphilly swimmers from the squad at the South East Wales Junior Development meet in May.

The girls under 11 individual medley relay team took gold medal, beating rival club Cardiff. The same team took silver in freestyle relay. The girls under 10 team also took silver in the same events for their age group.

Key added: “Our younger members of the squad have excelled at this development meet, swimming above expectation against bigger clubs in the region and producing fantastic times.

“We are a small club in the world of swimming, and have grown in numbers over the last few years from a handful of swimmers to a strong squad of 90 swimmers of all ages and abilities.

“The club can only grow from strength to strength and results like these shows that hard work pays off.”
The club formed 27 years ago as the Caerphilly Leisure Club. Shortly after, the club was renamed to Caerphilly County Swim Squad to reflect the catchment area of the swimmers.

Da Iawn to all the swimmers at CCSS, this is a great result and we can only build on this for the future.
