A late Harley Thomson try saw Bedwas claim a vital win in an even contest on Boxing Day.

The game started well for Bedwas with Lewis Hudd scoring a try after five minutes, outside-half for the day Kris Burton was wide with his conversion attempt.

Bridgend hit back as James Dixon landed a penalty after twenty minutes and two minutes later extended their lead with a well worked try by Tom Grabham converted by Dixon.

Dixon saw a penalty chance go wide on the half hour before Pewtner crashed through for a try converted by Burton put Bedwas two points ahead. Ross Jones missed a penalty chance for the home side on the stroke of half time to leave the score at Bridgend 10 Bedwas 12.

Jones made amends after the break and two penalties within ten minutes of the restart saw his side regain the lead. Burton’s penalty bought Bedwas to within three points but the home side extended their lead on the hour when lock forward Owain Lloyd powered over from close range. Jones added the extras for an eight point advantage going into the final quarter.

Bedwas heads didn’t drop and Budina took advantage of a defensive lapse to run in an unconverted try, although Bedwas looked to have given the home side an advantage when James Thomas was sin binned and Jones slotted the penalty goal to give his side a six point advantage with nine minutes left to play.

Bedwas were determined not to let the game slip and with five minutes of play left replacement Harley Thomson broke through for a try converted by Burton to lead by a solitary point. Bridgend fought to get a winning score but Bedwas held out for a crucial win complete with bonus point for scoring four tries.

Bedwas are next in action on Saturday January 4, when they visit Bargoed in the Swalec Cup, kick off 2.30pm.
