Caerphilly RFC beat Newport HSOB  16-11 at Virginia Park to cement their mid table position in Swalec Welsh League Division 3 East.

Despite Caerphilly going behind in the first 2 minutes Caerphilly fought back well with a penalty from outside half Luke Williams on 15 minutes equaling the score.

Caerphilly  broke the deadlock after a half way break saw centre Will Worthington release James Kestell.

The full back danced his way inside before an inch perfect pass to centre Chris Thomas who powered through the Newport defence to cross the whitewash before Williams converted.

The visitor’s benefited from some slack play from the home side, and through a couple of penalties found themselves on the 5 metre line, on 30 minutes.

Caerphilly won the ruck and cleared up field, however a run down the left from the centre released Matthew Hemmings on the switch, the winger scoring in the corner.

Caerphilly responded immediately as Williams slotted a penalty in front of the posts.

The visitors came out fighting in the second half, and enjoyed around 70% possession and territory attempting to close the gap and win the contest.

A penalty from Martin on 44 minutes gave the visitors hope.

Driving for the line, the home side were guilty of spoiling play 5 metres from the line and flanker Tom Ogden found himself in the sin bin.

Despite the pressure, Newport were unable to break the defence and a break from the home side on 58 minutes yielded a penalty which Williams duly converted to restore the 5 point difference a 16-11.

Strong defence from the home side kept the visitors out, despite losing Gareth England to the bin on 62 minutes, and a jubilant side celebrated only their second victory against the Newport side in 3 seasons.
