A hockey club for children aged between seven and 12 has been launched in Risca.

Risca Dragons Junior Hockey Club was set up to meet demand for more opportunities for children to play sport.

The club has received funding through from Sport Wales’ Community Chest Fund, allowing coaches to gain qualifications enabling them to train children in the community and schools.

Head coach Nikki Upton said: “We have identified that there is a need for a junior club after many requests from parents in the community.

“We are the only hockey club in the area and are keen to offer more opportunities for young people to get involved in hockey.”

The dragons train every Thursday on Risca Leisure Centre’s outdoor artificial pitch between 6pm and 7pm.

Cllr Dave Poole, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services, said: “It’s fantastic to see the Community Chest funds being put to use to introduce opportunities for children to access a new sport.

“Hopefully the children who benefit from the new Risca Dragons Junior Hockey Club will become hooked on hockey and in turn hooked on sport in general.”
