Rugby League: Cougars lose in last play in see-saw war with Bulls

Sport | | Published: 13:00, Friday May 30th, 2014.

RUGBY LEAGUE: A try from Huw Rosser from the last play of the game provided Bridgend Blue Bulls with a 32-26 victory over a Valley Cougars ‘A’ side on May 24.

The Bulls were the first on the score sheet, scoring from the base of a scrum.

Bridgend’s defence was resilient and the Cougars found it difficult to break down, especially with Darryl Harvey putting in big hit after big hit.

However, the Valley Cougars’ patience paid off with them equalling the scores with a try from Mike Hurley.

The Blue Bulls regained the lead through Hawkins. The loose-forward attempted an audacious chip on the third tackle, to the surprise of the opposition, and caught the ball to score.

An Owain Williams break led to a another try for the Bulls.

He was brought down but an immediate play of the ball enabled the half-backs to work in tandem with scrum-half, Matthew Davies, providing Gareth Howells with quick ball to open up space for himself to dive over out wide.

Ill-discipline provided the visitors with another opportunity and the Cougars touched down before half-time.

Bridgend re-established their lead with Williams crossing for a try early in the second half.

The prop broke from his own half, exhibiting surprising pace, and his power carried him over to score.

But the Cougars, based at Penallta RFC, responded and built a four-point lead with tries from Rhodri Morris and Dafydd Hellard,

The scores were soon level as the Bulls defence forced a turnover and Lewis Salter drew the man to put Kennedy in space to gallop down the touchline to score.

The Blue Bulls clinched the match-winning score with turnover ball finding its way to Rosser who ran 60 metres to score with the final play of the game.
