Valley Cougars remain third  in the Conference South following an impressive second half in Penallta  against Bristol Sonics on Saturday July 19.

Meanwhile, Aber Valley Wolves secured their place at the top of the Welsh Conference South table after winning their final game emphatically.

The Cougars won 52-16 against Bristol after running in 30 points without reply in the last 15 minutes, leaving them level on points with second placed Nottingham but lagging behind on points difference.

Bristol came out with all guns blazing and took an early lead after Mike Green intercepted a pass to score a try Mike Harrison converted.

Cougars started to take control and were rewarded through tries on 15 and 18 minutes through Scott Britton and Dan Davies.

Daryl Carter converted both to make the score 12-6.

It was a freak try that put Sonics level after Jack Uren caught a chip kick that came off the crossbar to score under the sticks.

But a brace of tries from Yousif Suliman, the first converted by Carter, gave the Cougars a 22-12 lead at the break.

Sonics were given hope ten minutes into the second half after Will Tobin went over in the corner to bring the score back to 22-16 but that was the last time they would cross the line.

An excellent individual effort from Suliman in the 65th minutes gave him his hat-trick which Carter converted to give the Cougars a two try cushion.

And in the last ten minutes, the Cougars ran riot to the give the score a somewhat unbalanced look.

Leighton Palmer crossed on 70 minutes and Carter converted. Ian Newbury followed him over on 75 minutes and Mike Hurley scored Cougars’ eighth from kick-off.

But the try of the game was left to the final move as Steve Bray brushed off a big high shot running past the Sonics’ full back and handing off their chasing defence.

Cougars’ coach Paul Emanuelli said: “I’m very pleased to be back to winning ways but a little disappointed with how we played at times during that game.

“I hate being negative but I know how good my boys can be and we can do even better than that.”
