Bedwas narrowly missed out on a chance to play in  the British and Irish Cup after losing 25-41 against Newport in the semi-final play-off on August 30.

Bedwas should have drawn first blood but Harley Thomson fumbled the ball after he ran an excellent angle to cross the try line.

Thomson could arguably have had a second minutes later but Rory Budina’s pass was deliberately knocked by Newport’s Owen Broad who was sin binned.

Two Richard Powell penalties finally saw Bedwas dominance rewarded but Newport refused to buckle.

Newport hit back with a well worked try from Daniel Robinson, which went unconverted, before Matt O’Brien put his side ahead with a penalty.

The home team’s heads seemed to drop but lifted when Joe Smith crossed and Powell added the conversion.

Barely four minutes later centre Arron Pinches forced his way over. Powell again converted.

Newport full back Geraint O’Driscoll lessened the gap when he crossed for an unconverted try as the first half ended with Bedwas 20-13 ahead.

Newport didn’t take long into the second half to level things up as Matt O’Brien was on the end of some good passes to cross for a try.

Four minutes later Will Evans broke through some weak Bedwas tackling to put Newport seven points ahead.

Matthew John’s unconverted try bought Bedwas back to within two pointst but brace of converted put Newport clear.

Newport were able to close out the game and although they could have extended their lead they held on for a deserved victory and face Cross Keys next weekend for the right to represent the Dragons’ region in the British and Irish Cup.

Bedwas have a week off and a chance to regroup before Llanelli visit the Bridgefield on Sunday September 14, kick-off 2-30pm.
