A Caerphilly-born mountain biker is the double elite world downhill champion after winning the World Championship and World Cup Series.

Manon Carpenter, 21, won the UCI Mountain Bike World Championship in thrilling style, by just 0.088 seconds.

She was crowned world champion in Hafjell, Norway on September 7, just days after she won the seven-stage World Cup Series.

The Madison Saracen Factory Team member finished third in the final stage in Maribel, France, having led for much of the competition.

She said: “It crept up on me, I didn’t see it happening. I just did not believe I was winning. I was sort of waiting for it to be taken away from me.

“The fact I finished it off is pretty crazy.

“I’ve consistently been the strongest all year long but I did not expect to win the World Championships on top, it was the icing on the cake.

“It’s nice to be home now, I had my first night out in Cardiff the other day. It’s nice to come and see everyone and to be calming down as I’ve been on a major high.”

In recognition of her achievements, Manon Carpenter has been shortlisted for the Elite Cyclist of the Year in the USN Welsh Cycling Awards that take place on October 18 at the Millennium Stadium.

Anne Adams-King, CEO of Welsh Cycling said: “We have had a fantastic 12 months of success for Welsh cyclists in competition, but the cycling community in Wales has also thrived and continued to develop and support the sport here in Wales.”
