A former Royal Welsh private from Aberbargoed won four gold medals at the Invictus Games on September 14.
Lewis Edwards, 26, competed in the pool for the British Armed Forces Team at the London event for wounded, injured and sick service personnel.
The Caerphilly County Swim Squad swimmer won gold in the 50m and 100m freestyle, the 50m backstroke and 50m breaststroke.
Mr Edwards narrowly missed out on the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in the summer but was confident before the Invictus Games.
He said: “I’m one of the fourth or fifth fastest in all those categories in the UK and around eighth in the world so statistically I should have won here. But those aren’t your thoughts, it’s just get in there and get on with it.”
Mr Edwards, who lost his arm above the elbow in a car crash in 2008, resulting in his medical discharge from the 2nd Battalion Royal Welsh, said the atmosphere at the games was phenomenal.
He was given two challenge coins, one from a US general who presented him with a medal and one from a US swimmer who he had consistently beaten in the pool.
He said: “Even though we were all against each other, we’re from the same background and know what each other has been through. You cheer on other countries.”
With the 2016 Paralympics his next goal Mr Edwards is already back in training after his success.
He said: “My original plan was Rio, whether it’s swimming or para-triathlon I’m not sure.
“I’m thinking triathlon as I can swim well and have always rode, I just need to get my running fitness back up to the level it was when I was in the military.”
