RIO CALLING: Russell White is aiming for the 2016 Paralympics

A Newbridge man is aiming for Paralympic success in Rio after winning gold in the British Triathlon Championships.

Russell White, 40, had his right arm amputated in 1998 from ongoing complications from a road traffic accident he had in 1993 and won the gold in Liverpool last month.

He has also achieved two silver British championship medals and a bronze world series medal while swimming 750m, cycling 20km and finishing off with a 5k run.

Mr White is aiming for the Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 with the help of Sport Caerphilly coach Stuart Wadlow.

He said: “Working with Stuart to improve my running and utilising the fantastic Caerphilly Council swimming facilities have transformed my triathlon performances from total beginner to competing with other world class athletes within the space of eighteen months.

“I’m very grateful to Caerphilly Council for supporting my development as an para-triathlete and for the opportunities they have provided to enhance my performance.

“After such a step up this year I’m excited to see what improvements next year will bring after another intensive winter of training.”
