A last minute try by Bedwas’ Rhys Hutcherson try earned his side a four try bonus point after a fast, furious and at times controversial game against unbeaten Carmarthen Quins on October 4.
Bedwas with the wind at their backs got off to a flying start. Home wingers Rory Budina and Mathew John ran in tries, both converted by Jack Maynard, and Bedwas led by fourteen points with only five minutes gone.
Carmarthen full back Dion Jones’s try and a conversion by Craig Evans reduced the deficit. The game was end to end and both side’s kickers added a penalty each as the scoreboard ticked over.
During eight minutes of stoppage time at the end of the half Dion Jones crossed for his second try again converted by Evans to tie up the scores at 17 each at the interval.
Carmarthen took the lead shortly after the break in controversial fashion. With Bedwas players and supporters claiming a knock on in midfield, everyone stopped. Referee Andrew Davies consulted his touch judges before awarding the try. Evans knocked over the conversion.
Rory Budina and Mathew John combined before the former sprinted in from long range to bring Bedwas back into the game with an unconverted try before Craig Evans extended the visitors’ lead.
Both sides made a mass of substitutions but Carmarthen profited most with a try by Rhys Williams, converted by Dan Jones. Bedwas were reduced to 14 men shortly afterwards when James Sawyer was sin binned for a ruck offence, Dan Jones kicking the resulting penalty.
With the clock ticking down Rhys Hutcherson dived over for Bedwas’ fourth try of the afternoon.
With Bedwas not competing in the British and Irish Cup they face Newport at the Bridgefield on Saturday October 25, kick off 2.30pm.
