Rugby Union: Caerphilly thrashed by league leaders Abertysswg

Sport | | Published: 16:30, Thursday October 16th, 2014.

Caerphilly’s winning streak came to a blunt halt at Virginia Park on October 11, collapsing to a 0-56 defeat at the hands of the early leaders of Division Two East, Abertysswg.

The visitors went ahead courtesy of a 12th minute penalty by the centre who scored 29 points in the game.

Caerphilly should have capitalised on six penalties awarded in the first ten minutes, but failed to find touch twice and missed a golden opportunity on nine minutes to take the lead.

The visitors broke the defensive lines easily, their big speedy backs punching holes in the home side’s defence on several occasions.

They also claimed rights to the lineouts with a 6ft 7in second rower towering above the tallest of the home side.

Caerphilly, to their credit, held the scrums fairly equal.

A scoreline of 0-25 at the interval looked a tall margin to overcome, which was made harder as the visitors crossed the line within six minutes of the second-half following a catch and drive from a penalty.

Abertysswg went on to score eight tries, in total, the second half yielding five of them as the visitors strived to cross the 50 point barrier.

Elsewhere in the club, the second XV game was called off at the last moment, whilst the Youth team travelled to Penallta, losing narrowly against their local rivals.

October 18 sees the senior side welcome Abergavenny, with 2.30pm kick-off, while the second XV entertain Abercwmboi at 2pm.
