A disabled ex-soldier is looking to raise £20,000 to enable him to compete at the 2016 Paralympic Games.
Lewis Edwards, from Aberbargoed, won four gold medals in the pool at the recent Invictus Games for wounded, injured and sick service personnel, and is looking to compete against the best para-triathletes in the world.
He said: “ The swimming option is still there but para-triathlon is more enjoyable.
“It’s a harder race than swimming, but with swimming the panic’s there all the time and one mistake and you’ve lost.
“In triathlon you have more control over the race.”
Edwards trains six to seven hours a day and has to train full-time to make the elite level needed to compete on the highest stage.
He said: “£20,000 covers my wage so I can keep my house and money for travelling and race entries. Some of the races are in Europe and all around the world.
“Equipment is expensive, the attachment for my arm so I can ride is $3,000 alone.
“It’s only until I get my foot in the door of the GB squad then they’re really good.”
The former Royal Welsh private lost his arm above the elbow in a car crash in 2008, resulting in his medical discharge from the 2nd Battalion.
He narrowly missed out on the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in the summer but is confident that sponsorship from companies, and the right training can get him to Brazil in two years.
