Football: Double defeats for Nelson Cavaliers

Sport | | Published: 10:22, Friday November 28th, 2014.

Nelson Cavaliers lost 1-0 to Cascade in a local derby in the Taff Ely and Rhymney Valley Premier League on November 22.

Nelson lost by the odd goal and put in a disappointing performance.

Cascade seemed more up for the game and went in front just before the half hour mark, after a mistake by a Cavaliers player at the edge of their own box.

Neither side created much in the way of chances as the Cavaliers huffed and puffed.

They seemed to build a head of steam up midway through the second half with a few goalmouth scrambles but failed to trouble the visiting keeper.

Cascade held on for a deserved win and gained revenge for the earlier game this season.

Nelson’s seconds needed a good response to their 10-1 defeat to Llantwit Fadre on November 15 but were second best against Cwrt Rawlin.

They failed to respond well enough and lost 6-2 in the Taff Ely and Rhymney Valley League Division One on November 22.

But they delivered a great effort for a very tough 90 minutes against a very good team.

The plan was simple, nullify the midfield and disrupt their football and straight away the midfield of Tom, Jamie and Keenan did exactly that.

As Nelson pressured, Kyle found some space out on the wing and fed Haydn who put in a great cross to JP who volleyed it home.

Cwrt Rawlin responded however but they could not break down the defence, who dealt with all attacks.

Cwrt Rawlin came out second half with a new shape and suddenly it seemed like they had extra players as they were everywhere and had upped the tempo.

About 20 minutes into the half Cwrt Rawlin won a free kick that was fired into the top corner to equal the scores.

A converted Cwrt Rawlin penalty made it 2-1, before relentless attacking led to the third.

Nelson changed shape to combat the change in momentum and it worked when Jamie made a great tackle and went on a great run and passed to Haydn who placed it in the corner to make it 3-2.

Nelson were suddenly fired up again and believed they could get back into it, but the opposition showed why they are top of the league with three unanswered goals.
