Crumlin-based Valleys Gymnastics Academy won Club of the Year at the Welsh Gymnastics Awards at the Sport Wales National Centre in Cardiff on December 13 last year.

Since moving to their Crumlin facility three years ago, the club has gone from strength to strength and trains over 1,000 gymnasts a week.

Luke Carpenter was awarded Coach of the Year at the awards for his contribution to the academy and has been nominated for the Caerphilly Sports Awards.

Mr Carpenter coaches over 250 children and young people every week in a variety of disciplines such as preschool, general, men’s artistic, freestyle and disability. He does this at VGA Crumlin each week, as well as in other community venues.

The club offers a wide range of disciplines for all ages and currently has gymnasts in several national squads, including men’s artistic, women’s artistic, disability and rhythmic.

Councillor David Poole, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services, said: “Congratulations to Valleys Gymnastics Academy, who are really helping to put Caerphilly county borough on the map. It is excellent to see that all of their hard work has been rewarded.”

VGA is a social enterprise run by a large team of volunteers supported by a small team of staff.

They also deliver a comprehensive young leaders programme to encourage young people to develop their coaching and training skills within the gymnastics field.
