A girls’ football team based in Blackwood have reached the semi-final of a top Welsh cup, just five seasons after forming in 2009.
Coed Duon Dragons will play Caernarfon Town in Newtown on March 8 in the FAW Under-16 Girls Cup in a bid to reach the final of the most prestigious tournament at that age.
The team were unbeaten in the group stages and beat Ammanford in the quarter finals.
They take on the team who won the cup last year, but the players are confident after a good season where they are currently second in the league.
Club Secretary Shaun Kalies said: “It’s a very high profile competition, it’s as far as we can go. The girls are very confident but it’s all down to what happens on the day.
“They are also in the mix for the league title which could even come down to the last game of the season.
“This is such a success story in a short space of time, but what is remarkable, and what shows commitment through the tough times, is that six of the girls who will be in the squad for the semi-final on Sunday, played in the very first game back in 2009.”
Coed Duon Dragons have grown stronger each season and their success in 2013/14 saw Chloe Chivers gain a Wales Under-15s cap, while her and four others represented Gwent Academy.
The team, who play their home games at Britannia Playing Fields in Cefn Fforest on Sunday afternoons, came runners-up in the South Wales FA Cup and South Wales Girls’ League last season.
