VICTORIOUS: Coed Duon Dragons celebrate the winner late in extra time

Coed Duon Dragons are into the final of the FAW Under-16 Girls Cup after beating Caernarfon Town 4-3 after extra time in Newtown on March 8.

The Blackwood girls came back from 3-0 down to face Prestatyn Town in the final of the top competition, in just their fifth season as a team.

The Dragons headed into the semi-final with a 100% record, winning all the group games, and beating Ammanford away in the quarter final.

Both sides started brightly, with Coed Duon missing key chances, which was crucial as poor defendingt lead to Caernarfon taking the opening goal and eventually taking a half-time 3-0 lead.

The girls were deflated and the mood was negative and defeatist, coaches Mike Jenkins and Leigh Spencer needed to lift spirits and lift the players. After strong words and a different team approach in the second-half, the coaches inspiration proved vital.

The second-half was a complete contrast of the first, with Coed Duon showing fight, determination and passion to push Caernarfon all the way.

Two quick goals from Nyeve Williams and Wales international Chloe Chivers turned the game on its head and momentum was with the Dragons.

With a never-say-die attitude, the Blackwood outfit fought hard till the end. Time was running out, but with sheer determination the Dragons stole a vital and well deserved goal by Regan Finch.

This had they game balanced and pushed the game into extra time, with a penalty shootout looming.

Both teams where out on their feet with Caernarfon coming close on several occasions, nearly steeling the dream from Coed Duon.

But with three minutes of extra time left a well worked bit of play and pressure from the Dragons freed Chivers to run in and grab her second goal and the decisive match winner.

Coed Duon will play Prestatyn Town in the final at Newtown, Powys on Easter Sunday, April 5.
