Rugby League: Valley Cougars bounce back from opening loss to beat Leicester Storm

Sport | | Published: 11:00, Thursday April 2nd, 2015.

It wasn’t as easy as it seemed for Valley Cougars in the mud but they couldn’t grumble about a 28-0 win over Leicester Storm in Conference League South at Glyncoch on Saturday March 28.

Last year’s champions were determined to get their season up and running after losing in West Wales last week and while it wasn’t pretty, they were ahead from the second minute when Lee Goddard picked up a crossfield kick to ground.

Paul Emanuelli, one of six South Wales Scorpions players in the Cougars’ side, kicked well, converting the first try before almost setting one up for Dean Higgs, but the winger was pushed into touch.

The second try came midway through the first half when Zak Williams opened up a gap for Anthony Symons to run home. Emanuelli converted again.

There were opportunities to score another, at either end, before the interval with Kevin James close for Cougars and Leicester winning a goal-line drop-out, but the score remained 12-0 on 40 minutes.

It took almost 20 minutes for Cougars to get their next try that came from Zak Williams as he forced his way through the Storm backline. Emanuelli goaled again to make it 18-0.

Cougars then found themselves down to 12 men not long before the end of the game following a sin-binning but they took control despite being a man down.

Mikey Rowe set up Kevin James in the corner before Anthony Symons raced under the sticks. Emanuelli converted the final try to complete proceedings.
