WINNERS: Blackwood Primary School

Caerphilly County Borough Council’s sports development department recently hosted a ‘Primary School Champions League’ football event at the Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach.

Blackwood Primary School came out on top during the tournament and lifted the trophy. Unlike the real Champions League winners Barcelona, Blackwood will unfortunately not be picking up millions of pounds in prize money.

Forty schools from across the borough entered the event, with a total of 400 boys and girls competing on the day for the trophy.

The schools were placed into 7 groups during the morning session based on last season’s Champions League. A series of games was played, combined with skills sessions from Cardiff City Football Club.

Following the morning session, the schools were put into groups depending on their results during the morning session. The winning group were then awarded medals, with the overall winners also being awarded the trophy. The winners were as follows:

Group A – Blackwood Primary
Group B – Llancaeach Juniors
Group C – Ysgol Gilfach Fargoed
Group D – Pengam Primary
Group E – Libanus Primary
Group F – Tynewydd Primary
Group G – Coed Y Brain Primary

Rachel McCarthy, teacher at Pengam Primary said: “The organisation, coaching and refereeing on the day was excellent. Overall it was a fabulous tournament.”

Cllr Nigel George, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services, said: “The Primary School Champions League football event hosted by Sport Caerphilly was a huge success. Each and every child seemed to thoroughly enjoy it and I am delighted that they were all given such a brilliant opportunity.”
