A Caerphilly county councillor swung to victory at the final of the American Golf Long Drive Championship on August 21.
With a 328 yard drive, Steve Kent beat off tough competition from the other finalists in his category to be crowned American Golf’s Over 45s Long Drive Champion and book his place at the World Long Drive Finals in Texas.
Out of thousands of competitors just 15 people made it to the final at the American Golf National Academy in Cheshire.
Kent said: “I’ve always hit a long ball so when I saw there was a qualifier at the Cardiff American Golf I just went along for a bit of fun.
“It’s been a wonderful event and to win my over-45 age category was fantastic, but I never imagined I’d be in the overall lead right up to the last match.
“I hit the longest drive of the day in the first round and I only got beaten by the last legal drive in the competition.
“The winner, Dan Konyk, is a great Long Drive champion though and I’m incredibly excited to be lining up with him and representing American Golf and Garmin at the world championships.”
