Despite being the only scorers in the second half Bedwas could not break down a strong Aberavon defence as the Wizards won 24-16 in the Principality Premiership on September 12.

Aberavon debutante Steff Williams produced a fine performance and proved a vital link as his side opened up a 24-8 interval lead before it was all hands to the pump as Bedwas got on and over the line without grounding.

Bedwas never threw the towel in and after a poor opening, their use of replacements strengthened them. But they lost flanker George Lee to a yellow card after 29 minutes.

Bedwas head coach Steve Law said: “Despite a good last 30 minutes we made too many early handling errors and missed tackles.

“Yes, the bench did help us but we left ourselves with too much to do and I was disappointed with our performance.”

Bedwas host local rivals Cross Keys on Saturday September 19.

Cross Keys lost their opening two games of the season in the Principality Premiership, with a 30-10 defeat at Llandovery followed by a 30-26 loss at home to Cardiff.

Meanwhile, in the SSE Swalec Championship, Bargoed have failed to find their unbeaten form of last season losing to Beddau 21-14 at home and narrowly to RGC 1404 away, 27-25.

But Newbridge sit two points off the top after beating RGC 1404 23-17 at home before travelling to Cardiff Met to beat the students by 19 points to 13, but failing to secure bonus points.
