Rugby League: Scorpions match venue switched ahead of Saturday

Sport | | Published: 13:53, Tuesday February 9th, 2016.

South Wales Scorpions have switched this Saturday’s rugby league friendly matches against Hemel Stags to the Caerphilly Centre of Sporting Excellence, Ystrad Mynach.

It will be a double header of action with the two sides’ under 20s clashing at 5.15pm before the first team game kicks off at 7pm.

Last week, the Scorpions were denied a friendly after their opponents refused to switch to 4G and a revised time, but there have been no issues with Hemel Stags who just want to get the friendly match played – the last one before the regular season starts a week later.

And with inclement weather predicted for much of this week, both the Scorpions and the Stags have taken nothing to chance to ensure the match takes place.

Scorpions coach Phil Carleton said: “We were all disappointed not to take to the field last week as we wanted to get our season started, but we’re delighted that Hemel have agreed to this change of time so it’s all systems go as we prepare for the 2016 season.”

Hemel coach Troy Perkins said: “The most important thing was to get the game on and I’m pleased that Scorpions were able to find an alternative pitch. We had no issue with the change. It’s always good to come to Wales. It’s a good test for us and with South Wales strengthening their squad, it will give me a good idea of where my squad is at leading up to the iPro and Challenge Cups.”

Saturday’s matches will now take place at Caerphilly Country Borough Centre for Sporting Excellence, Caerphilly Road, Ystrad Mynach, Caerphilly. CF82 7EP.

Admission on the gate is £5 adults £2 concessions. Season ticket holders free. There is ample free parking on site.

South Wales Scorpions travel to London Skolars in the first round of the iPro Sport Cup on Saturday 20th February (kick-off 4pm).
