Penpedairheol rally driver Aaron Jones extended his lead in the Welsh Tarmac Rally Championship Class 2 rankings with a third consecutive race win on Sunday, March 27 at the Tour of Caerwent in Newport.
Aaron, 20, once again had 18-year-old co-driver Owen Evans calling the notes, as adverse weather caused problems for the first cars out.
Mud and debris on the track may have slowed the initial pack, but the young pairing showed good intuition to navigate their way past the morning stages and terrible conditions to finish just outside the top 20.
An improvement in the weather saw Aaron able to push his car to the limits on the midday stages, hints of sunshine providing better visibility on some twisting loops.
The brief reprieve in the rain didn’t last long, though, as stormy conditions once again plagued the final afternoon courses.
Aaron said: “After the lunch halt, the weather turned mad. We saw rain and hail bouncing off the floor as we lined up for the last two stages.
“The bad weather suited us against the bigger, more powerful cars on the event. With a big push, we managed to catch and pass three cars mid-stage.”
Aaron and Owen were able to finish in 18th place in the overall rally rankings, and first in the Class 2 standings.
Aaron added: “Luckily for us we have lots of products from our sponsors, PowerMaxed, to help clean and maintain the car after what turned out to be a very wet and muddy weekend away.”
