Open-water endurance race success for Oakdale swimmer

Sport | | Published: 16:05, Friday April 15th, 2016.

A swimmer from Oakdale secured sixth place at the Red Bull Neptune Steps race in Glasgow on Saturday April 9.

Ayesha Matthews, 22, finished third in her heat to qualify for the final, and completed the Maryhill Locks course final in sixth place, posting a time of 9 minutes 40 seconds.

The Red Bull Neptune Steps is an open-water endurance race which sees competitors swim 420 metres up a canal, in between climbing eight lock gates and diving off a canal boat.

The uphill race tests competitors in strength, stamina and speed as they battle against each other and the chilly Scottish waters to cross the finish line.

Ayesha and fellow swimmer Owen Dobbs, 24, from Gilwern, had been training with Abertillery Piranha’s triathlon team in preparation for the event.

Owen finished eighth in the men’s heat, but couldn’t clinch a final position, finishing 19th in the first semi-final, with only the quickest 10 progressing from each.

The Red Bull Neptune Steps is in its second year of running, and saw 209 people take part in 2016.
