Local children get into the Euros spirit with Ystrad Mynach tournament

Sport | | Published: 10:52, Friday June 24th, 2016.

Sport Caerphilly have held two football festivals at Ystrad Mynach’s Centre for Sporting Excellence to get local children in the spirit of the ongoing European Championships in France.

Over 460 boys and girls from 46 schools took part in their own replica Euro 2016 on Friday June 11 to coincide with the opening match.

Each of the schools represented a competing nation for the day, and spent the morning playing each other to determine group seedings for the afternoon matches.

With as many as eight matches kicking off at the same time, it was a football frenzy as Ysgol Bro Allta, in Ystrad Mynach, were crowned overall winners, competing as tournament hosts France.

On Wednesday June 15, over 250 local girls took part in a day’s worth of skills training aimed at encouraging more girls to start playing football.

Cllr Nigel George, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services said: “It’s fantastic to see these kinds of events taking place with our young people. We’re very keen indeed to encourage and support our young people and help them to fulfil their potential as footballing stars of the future.”
