Caerphilly Town Mayor Cllr Steve Kent has qualified for the National Finals of the American Golf Nine-Hole Championship.

Cllr Kent, a keen golfer, was competing with partner Delfi Rhys at Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club, in Bridgend.

The pair scored 24 points across the back-nine, winning a place at the iconic Ryder Cup venue, The Belfry to compete in the final.

They’ll face the winners of 18 other qualifying competitions across the UK and Ireland at the Brabazon Course on September 9 and 10.

On securing progression in his second American Golf Championship, Cllr Kent said: “The Long Drive was great fun last year so I couldn’t wait to try another of American Golf’s championships.

“The Nine-Hole at Pyle and Kenfig was a superb event and I really can’t wait to get to the Belfry to compete with the best nine-hole golfers from all across the country.

“I’ll have defended my Long Drive title by then too so hopefully the nine-hole will make it three titles out of three.”

Cllr Kent is the holder of the American Golf Senior Long Drive title and represented retailer American Golf at the World Championships in 2015.
