Rugby Union National Leagues: Wins for Caerphilly, Risca and Rhymney, as Newbridge off bottom spot

Sport | | Published: 14:24, Friday September 30th, 2016.

Caerphilly extended their unbeaten run to three games in all competitions on Saturday September 24, while a much-needed win for Newbridge saw them move off bottom spot in the National League Championship.

Returning to league action, Caerphilly beat Monmouth RFC 21-28 at the Sportsground in the National League Division 3 East A to register their third consecutive victory in all competitions.

Heading into the match having disposed of Llandaff North in the first round of the National Bowl the previous week, Caerphilly raced into the lead with an early penalty, but were quickly pegged back by a Monmouth try, which went unconverted.

Both sides traded penalties, before Monmouth lost a man to the sin-bin and the Castlemen took advantage, holding a 9-8 lead at the break.

However, indiscipline from Caerphilly saw them reduced to 14 men, and creative play saw the hosts regain the lead at 18-9.

As the clock ticked down, Caerphilly chipped away at the deficit, before William Worthington’s try and a late penalty secured a 27-21 victory for the visitors.

Elsewhere, Newbridge registered their first win of the season with a 31-21 victory over Bedlinog which saw them move off the bottom spot in the National League Championship table.

Newbridge’s victory, combined with losses for Glamorgan Wanderers and Glynneath, saw them jump to 10th on points difference, and face Newcastle Emlyn on Saturday October 1.

In National League Division 1 East, Risca clinched a narrow 24-17 win over Brynmawr, and Penallta bested Senghenydd with a 27-5 result.

In National League Division 3 East B, Rhymney also secured their first win of the season, with a 41-31 defeat of Crumlin, while Machen remain top of the table with victory over Hafodyrynys.

Markham put Pontllanfraith to the sword in National League Division 3 East C, with a resounding 69-7 victory over their borough rivals.
